How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works

The grant is installer-led, so homeowners usually do not need to submit the main Ofgem application themselves.

1

Compare MCS installer quotes

Start by getting quotes from suitable MCS certified installers. They can assess whether an air source heat pump is right for your home.

2

Confirm grant eligibility

Your chosen installer checks the Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules with you before applying through Ofgem on your behalf.

3

Grant deducted from the price

If approved, the grant value is taken off the amount you pay and should be shown clearly on your quotation and invoice.

Who is eligible?

  • You own the property (owner-occupied or private landlord).
  • You are replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as gas, oil, electric or LPG.
  • You use an MCS certified installer, who applies for the grant on your behalf.
  • The property has not already received government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler.

Exact eligibility depends on the scheme and property. For the latest Boiler Upgrade Scheme rules, check the official GOV.UK eligibility guidance.

Air source heat pump grant FAQs

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for an air source heat pump?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can provide up to £7,500 towards an eligible air source heat pump in England and Wales.

Who applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Your MCS certified installer applies through Ofgem after you agree a quote. The grant is then deducted from the installation cost if approved.

Can landlords apply for the heat pump grant?

Yes. GOV.UK says property owners can apply, including landlords, second-home owners and business property owners, as long as the wider scheme rules are met.

Can tenants apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

Tenants cannot usually apply themselves because the property owner must apply. A landlord may be able to apply for an eligible privately rented property.

Can new build homes get the grant?

Most new build properties are not eligible. Finished new builds with a fossil fuel boiler may be considered, and self build homes can have separate rules.

Can I get a grant for a hybrid heat pump system?

No. GOV.UK says the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not fund hybrid heat pump systems, such as a gas boiler combined with an air source heat pump.
